<image:caption>Oil on Canvas - 25cm X 20cm Joseph Yoakum was an American naive artist. His father was a Cherokee Indian and his mother was a former slave of French, African and Native American descent. He left home at the age of nine to join the circus and worked his way up from a horse groomer to an advance man position. The advance men held remarkable navigational knowledge and were usually two weeks ahead of the circus, raising awareness before the show came into town. In adulthood as well as working in the Circus he fought in WWI. After the death of his second wife and at the age of 76 Joseph Yoakum began to reminisce on the landscapes he had witnessed from a nomadic life of travel. He represented this through the medium of drawing, working from his memories alone.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Oil on Canvas - 25cm X 20cm Antonio Ligabue was born in Switzerland. His mother and brother died of food poisoning when he was young and Ligabue became a foster child. After a violent outburst against his foster mother he was deported to Italy. Despite his assumed Italian origin he couldn’t speak a word of Italian and after numerous failed attempts to get back to Switzerland he began living in a primitive hut on the banks of the river Po. A lifetime of ill-fated human relationships forced an already isolated Ligabue to seek refuge with animals. He became known locally as the madman and could be heard mimicking the sounds and communicating with his large array of pets that followed him wherever he went. Inspired by his companions he began to create animal sculpting’s using clay from the river Po and soon afterwards began to paint eventually being dubbed the ‘Italian Van Gogh’ for his remarkable body of work.</image:caption>

He did this by clutching a brush with his right hand and using his left arm to steer his injured arm across the canvas. As Pippin explained in his letters and notebooks “The war brought out all the art in me”.</image:caption>

Like many of the Native children of his generation he was sent to a Christian boarding school where he was banned from practicing his own culture. For the majority of his life he worked tough manual labour jobs but at the age of 60 he was recruited to act in the TV series ‘Cariboo country’. Where he received critical acclaim for his performances and went on to star in films such as ‘Little Big Man’ and ‘The Outlaw Josey Wales’ working with the likes of Clint Eastwood and Dustin Hoffman. Chief Dan George also made numerous influential speeches inspiring a generation of Natives to preserve the traditions of their culture. <image:caption>Oil on Canvas - 38cm X 32cm Warren Harding was a rock climbing pioneer and hard hat construction worker. His peers who were generally of the beatnik generation were irritated by his ‘impure’ approach to climbing and for his wild antics and love of drinking and women. Whilst making his notorious climbs he would often abseil back down the cliff face to stock up on alcohol and on one occasion to meet his mother who had cooked him a thanksgiving dinner. He became a household name whilst attempting an unclimbed face of the Yosemite Valley when a crowd beneath had mistook him taking a rest for being stuck and sent for a rescue helicopter. Hardings response was to throw down a can with a note inside that read “A rescue is unwarranted, unwanted and will not be accepted”.</image:caption>

Jean-Pierre lives in one of the historic ‘Almshouses’ also known as Gods Houses that were built originally in the 14th century for the peasants in a time when Bruges was the art capital of the world. His motto in life is to live with ‘humour, beauty and love’ and with his camera phone he documents the changing skies above Bruges. He is a published poet and writes in his favourite language of Spanish and is also known for his vast collection of Matchbox model cars.</image:caption>

The painting is a documentation of the environment that the artist lives and work as well as his influences and interests. In the back of the painting you can see the mirror from Van Eyck’s ‘The Arnolfini Portrait’ where Edge pays homage to his love of the Flemish Primitives and in particular Van Eyck’s masterpiece. It is believed that ‘The Arnolfini Portrait’ was created as a painted version of a marriage contract. So in Edges self portrait the mirror was used also a symbol of Edge’s recent marriage.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Oil on Canvas - 30cm X 40cm Robert Peary was an American arctic explorer. At the age of four his father died and Peary’s mother who had always longed for a daughter began dressing him as a little girl. After completing school he became a civil engineer and a lieutenant in the navy where he first became obsessed with the idea of reaching the Pole. Peary who was married with two children rarely saw his family and missed the birth and premature death of his son as a result. His wife who was fed up of living alone later joined him in the Pole only to discover that he now started a new family with a 14 year old Eskimo girl. She eventually forgave Peary and even became a motherly figure to Eskimo wife. After numerous failed attempts to reach the North Pole in 1909 he finally fulfilled his ambitions.</image:caption>

In this paintings Edge depicts Peary shortly after he finally achieved his life time ambition of reaching the North Pole. It was reported that he became saddened and withdrawn after the expedition. There has since been many theories with many believing that he never actually made it to the Pole, whilst others believe that by reaching the Pole he had lost his purpose.</image:caption>

He took part in numerous arctic expeditions and lived side by side with the Inuit people of Greenland and fathered two children with his Inuit wife. Tragically his young family died of a flu epidemic and when the church refused his wife a proper burial Freuchen was forced to bury her himself. This further reinforced his deep disgust and hatred of treatment of the Inuit people by the Christian missionaries. During the second World War with Denmark now under Nazi Occupation Freuchen became part of the Danish resistance movement. Freuchen himself was Jewish and was captured and sentenced to death but managed to escape to Sweden.</image:caption>

During his expeditions he wintered with the Netsilik Inuit people and unlike many explorers before him, who dismissed them as savages, took it on himself to learn their customs and survival skills. It was this knowledge that gave Admundsen the edge in the race for the South Pole. Amundsen also would later become the first man to reach the North Pole by flight but in 1928 tragically died whilst on a rescue mission. His body was never found but it is believed that the plane crashed in to Bear island, Norway.</image:caption>

The voyages official photographer Frank Hurley captured many key events of the Endurance Expedition (One of his photos Edge used as the source material for this this painting) After the Endurance ship finally became to the pressure of the ice and sank Shackleton ordered Hurley to select 120 glass negatives out of the 400 he had taken. There could be no extra weight as they were stranded in the arctic and survival came first. <image:caption>Oil on Canvas - 33cm X 25cm Mabel Stark was an American tiger trainer and circus performer. As a young lady she began working at the circus and developed a passion for working with the big cats. She worked her way up from looking after the tigers to performing in the big top with up to eighteen at a time. Stark orphaned a sickly young tiger called Raj that was rejected by his mother and nursed him back to health. This close bond took her career to a new level when she developed an act that involved wrestling with Raj. Now attracting a large following she was hired by the world renowned Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey circus. During her dangerous career she was mauled on numerous occasions and in some instances nearly lost her life such as the time where she received 378 stitches to repair muscle and skin damage.</image:caption>

At a young age he developed a fascination for magic and by the age of 20 he was performing around New York. He later married and joined a Circus where he began practicing the art of escape. One of his most notable feats was to escape from a heavily weighted box in which he was lowered Into New Yorks east river. In later life he became interested in the occult and after the death of his beloved mother made attempts to contact her from ‘the other side’. His attempts were unsuccessful and this experience inspired a life long campaign to expose the mystics that he considered frauds. Houdini died of a ruptured appendix after suffering a blow to the stomach from a university student who had challenged him to hit him with all his might. Houdini agreed but was struck unexpectedly before he could prepare.</image:caption>

The procession was originally banned in 1837 due to licentiousness and drunken behaviour but was revived in 1974. According to local legend the Earl of Rone was a man named Hugh O’Neill, that was forced to flee his Native Ireland to avoid capture and execution by the British that had marked him as a wanted man for his part in the Irish rebellion. Whilst attempting to reach the shores of France he got caught in a storm and was shipwrecked and landed on a local bay known as Raparee Cove, where he hid in the woods surviving only on the ships sea biscuits where he was eventually discovered by a mob of angry locals. The service originally took place in 1946 at Grimaldi’s graveside at the old St James Church, Pentonville Road, Islington, and then moved to the Holy Trinity Church in Dalston, also known as ‘The Clowns Church’ that up until last year housed a museum and archive including the Clowns Egg Register, a custom that clowns use to trademark their individual clown face designs by painting the patterns on to eggs. Over the years the service has grown in popularity and had to be moved to its current venue to accommodate the growing numbers of clowns, worshipers and members of the general public that wish to pay their respects to Grimaldi.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Oil on Canvas - 30cm x 25cm Every year on the last Sunday of September, starting at Guildhall square and then ending up at the St Mary Le Bow church the London tradition of the Pearly Kings and Queens Harvest Festival takes place. The custom itself of the Pearly Kings and Queens was founded in the 19th century by Henry Croft who was an orphan, road sweeper and rat catcher from Somers Town, London, who after noticing the costermongers (a person who sells goods, especially fruit and vegetables, from a handcart in the street') practice of wearing buttons sewed on to their clothes as a way of recognising and helping one another was inspired to begin covering his own clothes with pearl buttons to attract attention to himself whilst out raising money for local orphanages and other charities. As his popularity and demand grew he soon appointed various Pearly Kings, Queens, Princes and Princesses from each London borough and in 1911 an official organised Pearly society was formed. The tradition is still thriving today and much like the actual royal family the honours and titles are inherited and passed down and kept within the original Pearly families.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Oil on canvas - 50cm X 40cm The Hallaton Hare Pie Scramble and Bottle Kicking tradition takes place annually on Easter Monday in the village of Hallaton, Leicestershire. The custom begins with a procession that ends up at the local church where the Hare pie scramble begins. The local folklore on the origins of the Hare pie is to do with the lucky escape of a well to do lady, who once upon a time lived upon the hill now known as 'Hare Pie Bank' on which whilst out walking was charged at by a ferocious bull, when seemingly out of nowhere a Hare ran from the bushes and into its path saving her from death or serious injury. To celebrate her escape she gave a yearly sum of money to the local parish to make two large Pies and to supply two kegs of beer (known locally as bottles) to be shared out to the poor of the village. This evolved in to somewhat of a scramble as people fought with the men of the neighbouring village of Medbourne that soon crashed the event in an attempt to steal the 'bottles' of beer for themselves. The Hallaton men would then respond by fighting back and retrieving the stolen goods and the game now known as 'Bottle Kicking' evolved from there. The same game that locals believe inspired William Webb Ellis, the inventor of Rugby to pick up a football and run with it after witnessing the game first hand whilst visiting his aunt that lived in the town. Other local beliefs is that the pie is a continuation of a Pagan tradition in which Hares were sacrificed to the spring goddess ‘Eostre’ who’s name later evolved into the word ‘Easter’ the Christian replacement for the old Pagan celebration.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Oil on Canvas - - 80cm x 70cm The tradition of the Straw Bear, that is also found in parts of Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic and Poland, is believed to have originated from the medieval carnival figure of the Wild Man or as a ritualistic expulsion of winter connected to fertility rites and bountiful harvest traditions. The Straw Bear of Whittlesea I was told by locals was originally started by farmers on the Tuesday following Plough Monday, that would go from door to door to entertain spectators in return for beer, tobacco and beef to help them through the tough months of winter. If they failed to oblige their front lawns would fall victim to the ploughs of the plough boys that accompanied the straw bears. It is also speculated to have origins going back to the real dancing bears that used to be paraded through the streets and taverns in medieval times much like the Straw Bear is today. This year was a special year with it being 40 years since the Straw Bear custom was revived in Whittlesey. Prior to its revival the tradition was stopped in 1908 due to drunk and disorderly behaviour.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Oil on Canvas - 65cm X 80cm The Flaming Tar Barrels of Ottery St Mary in Devon is an annual festival that takes place on the 5th of November and is believed by the locals to go all the way back to the precursor of Halloween, the ancient fire festival of Samhain where the veil between the living and the dead was at its thinnest and spirits could wander back from the after life and bonfires were lit as a way of deterring evil spirits. In Ottery residents run with the flaming tar barrels hoisted on their backs beginning with the children’s Barrel’s that starts mid afternoon, and ending with the honoury Midnight Barrel that is the largest and most dangerous of all! To participate you must have been born in the town and despite the obvious dangers it is considered a great honour to take part in the ancient tradition that has been kept alive and passed down by their ancestors for centuries. The event is not only dangerous for those taking part, but equally for the spectators alike, as the unpredictable ever changing direction of the Barrels causes panic in the densely packed streets, as the mass body of the crowd sways, splits and falls off, crushing itself up against the buildings of the town square where the majority gather.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Oil On Canvas - 30cm X 25cm The tradition of the Brittania Coconut dancers that takes place annually on Easter Saturday is said to have derived from Moorish pirates that first settled in Cornwall and found work in the Tin mines. During the 18th century when the Cornish mining industry began to decline some men left and moved to Lancashire to work in the coalmines, bringing the dance with them. The dance itself I was told by one of the ‘nutters’ is a spring ritual of Pagan or medieval origin to celebrate the coming of spring, the renewal of vegetation and to move on the evil spirits of winter’.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Oil on Canvas - 30cm x 25cm The Haxey Hood is an ancient game that takes place on the 6th of January, the traditional Twelfth day of Christmas. The custom is believed to have originated in the 14th century, when a landowner named Lady de Mowbry was out riding when a sudden gust of wind blew off her fine silk hood. Thirteen farm workers rushed to retrieve the hood that was now being blown left right and centre across Lady de Mowbry's land. After an animated chase one of the farm labourer’s finally managed to catch it. Plagued by shyness instead of handing the hood back to the lady himself, he got another of the workers to do it for him. Lady de Mowbry thanked the man who did return it and said that he had ‘acted like a Lord, whereas the worker who actually caught it was a fool’. She was so amused by the whole episode that she then donated 13 acres of land, on the condition that this wild hood chase would be reenacted each and every year, this reenactment has been taking place ever since.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Oil On Canvas - 40.5cm X 30cm The Saddleworth Rushcart is part of an ancient ceremony known as Rushbearing. Rushes (A type of plant) were once placed on top of cold stone floors to provide insulation and to protect the knees of worshipers in churches. During the middle ages the simple procedure of transporting rushes to churches became a competitive activity between towns and villages, where each would try to top each other by creating the most elaborate and decorative Rushcart and over time these got bigger and bigger and eventually Jockeys were introduced to sit on the top. After the procession the Rushcart’s are then dismantled and the rushes strewn on the floor. In Saddleworth the tradition still takes place and it takes up to a hundred Morris men to to push and pull the huge Rushcart along during the two day procession.</image:caption>

It is often credited as a primitive form of Carol singing that evolved from such early customs. In some instances such as in the area of Gower the skull is ritualistically buried beneath the earth and then dug up for the custom each and every year. There is a great mystery surrounding the Mari Lwyd and conflicting accounts of its origins. Many believe that it is rooted in pre-Christian and Pagan times. It is also speculated that the symbol of the dead horse miraculously coming back to life represents the death of the darkest days of winter and the approaching rebirth of spring. Iv been intrigued by the Green Man ever since and here is my painting of Londons very own Green Man of Bankside from Londons October Plenty celebrations. October Plenty is a combination of old customs to celebrate the harvest and the bounty of autumn. Like most characters of folklore, the origins of the Greenman are lost in the midst of time and widely speculated over, with some tracing the origins back to ancient cultures, where similar foliate head figures can be found, such as in Nepal, Greece, India and and Egypt. whilst others believe it to have originated in Celtic Britain, where at the birth of Christianity cult pagan deities such as the Green man were incorporated in to the symbolism of the church, to help convince worshipers of the old gods to convert to christianity.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Oil on Canvas - 65cm X 50cm Every year on the Monday after the 4th of September the ancient ritual of the Abbots Bromley Horn dance is performed. The origins of the Horn Dance itself are a great mystery and believed by many to have taken place since Pre Christian times, originally as a fertility rite, or a hunting ritual where hunters mimicked the movements of deer to confuse them and to ensure a successful hunt. The dance is performed by the six Antler Men, a Hobby Horse, a Fool, Maid Marion, an Archer and the accompanying musicians. The horns themselves which are reindeer antlers, have now been carbon dated to the year 1065, making them not far off 1,000 years old. As reindeer were long extinct in Britain in the 11th century they must have been bought over by the Vikings from Scandinavia. <image:caption>Oil on canvas - 80 X 70 cm Every year in the Town of South Queensferry, Scotland on the second Friday of August, the ancient folk custom of the Burry Man takes place, In which he must endure a 7 mile walk, stopping at houses, pubs and local sites covered from head to toe in sticky burrs that scratch and irritate the skin. There is much speculation surrounding the legend of the Burry man who's origins have been lost in time. Some believe it was originally a ritual to ward of evil spirits. With other theories including that the Burryman was once a sacrificial victim, a scapegoat and a symbol of fertility and rebirth. In the past the Burry man was a tradition that took place in various fishing communities across Scotland with the added purpose to 'raise the herring' when the fishing was bad. Today only this one survives. It is believed that by giving the Burry Man a whiskey in exchange for one of his Burrs that good luck will come to you for the year.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Oil On Canvas - 50cm X 42cm The Summer Solstice is a day that marks the time of year when daytime is at its longest and night time at its shortest. This painting depicts my experience from Last years Solstice at Stonehenge. I had originally wanted to visit to get some study shots of the 'Council of British Druid Orders' that usually gather within the stone circle to perform there Summer Solstice ritual, but due to a fee of £15 now being charged in the car park, one of the leaders 'Arthur Uther Pendragon' (who believes he is king Arthur reincarnated) In protest against having to 'pay to pray' now stands outside the grounds behind a barbed wire fence, where half the druids that also refuse to enter stand with him, and the other half stand on the inside, forming a circle around the fence. having been up all night and not being able to get the source material I had originally intended, I wandered off and noticed a striking silhouette of a woman incredibly dressed standing alone, watching the sunrise. Who I later found out had come all the way from Russia. This for me echoed Stonehenge's ancient roots of being a place of pilgrimage, where pilgrims would travel from far distance's to congregate at the stones and celebrated the changing of the seasons.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Oil On Canvas - 25cm X 30cm Every year in mid July, the annual 5 day ceremony of Swan Upping on the River Thames takes place. The origins date right back to the 12th century, when the Crown claimed ownership of all mute swans as they were considered a delicacy and eaten at royal banquets and feasts. In the fifteen century the worshipful company of the Dyers and the Vintners were also given the right to own swans on the Thames. To differentiate who owned which swans, markings were introduced to the beaks as a solution. Two nicks for the Vintners, One nick for the Dyers and no nicks for the Crown. The pub name, that still exists in various places today 'The Swan with two necks' evolved from the vintners 'The Swan with two nicks'. The earliest record of a royal swan heard was made in 1186 and an official office for the keeper of king swans was made in 1378.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Oil On Canvas - 75cm X 65cm Up until the year 1859 on the 29th of May there was once an English public holiday known as 'Oak Apple Day' that commemorated the restoration of the English Monarchy in 1660. During the celebrations people were expected to wear oak apples or leaves as a reference to the Battle of Worcester in 1651, where Charles II hid in an Oak Tree escaping from the Roundhead rebel army. Anyone caught without a sprig of oak were egged, pinched or whipped with nettles. In the town of Castleton, Derbyshire a celebration still exists to this day where the Garland King on horseback leads a procession through the town dressed from head to his waist with a large Garland reminiscent of the May Day tradition of Jack in the green. It has been suggested that it could have been merged with Oak apple day from a more ancient May Day celebration that had been banned during the Interregnum period when Britains Monarchy fell and all May Day festivals were outlawed due to there non christian connections.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Oil On Canvas - 50cm X 45cm Every year on the Saturday closest to 19th of June, the Horns of Ock street are paraded through the town of Abingdon, Oxfordshire. The tradition goes back to an event that took place in the year 1700, where there was an annual horse fair and Ox roast in the towns market square that typically ended with the 'well to do' men of the Vineyard taking the horns home with them at the end of the festivities. However on this particular year, the working men of 'Ock street' had decided it was unjust and fought with the men of the vineyard for them. After successfully winning the fight they celebrated there victory with a parade of the horns and have done so every year ever since. Later after a full day of drinking, Morris dancing and general celebration, a second tradition takes place where a Mock Mayor is elected by the residents of Ock Street, whose role is to embarrass and speak against the real Mayor when unpopular decisions are made. The Mock Mayor tradition that goes back centuries, was once common across England and still takes place in handful of towns in Cornwall and Oxfordshire.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Oil On Canvas - 50 X 44.5 cm Every year on May Day in the Cornish town of Padstow the tradition of the 'Obby Oss' festival takes place. It's origins have been speculated over for centuries with many believing its roots lie with Pre-Christian fertility rites. The once common May Day tradition of the Hobby Horse dates back to at least the medieval period, however the Padstow 'Oss' with its unique, savage appearance is said to have evolved from a Padstow Sailor named Octavius Branton who on a voyage witnessed the 'Duk Duk' dancers of New Guinea. Returning with a mask that got introduced to the costume. Another local legend is that it began during the French Wars, when a French ship approached Padstow and with all the men away at war, a quick thinking local woman wore a mask and instructed others to disguise themselves with cloaks and to march to the cliff tops banging drum's. This resulted in a French retreat after they mistook the party to be a heathen army with the Devil at its head.</image:caption>

The ceremony is also held in London to demonstrate the Pagans belief that the City of London will eventually return back to its natural state and nature will reclaim it. <image:caption>Oil on Canvas - 55cm X 55cm Richard Dadd was an English painter born in 1817. He studied at the Royal Academy and In 1842 his patron Sir Thomas Phillips commissioned Dadd to travel with him to the Middle East to document his journey. During the trip Dadd’s behaviour caused alarm when he became violent and delusional. Philips, now concerned for his own safety, called a premature end to the trip. Once Dadd returned home we was referred to a physician who wrongly advised him to rest when in fact he was suffering from Bipolar disorder. Rest did not help and after another psychotic break down tragedy struck when Richard Dadd murdered his father and fled to France. After his capture he was sent to the insane asylum Bedlam (now the imperial war museum, Lambeth) Where Dadd was encouraged to paint by a physician named Alexander Morison where he created some of his most celebrated and interesting artworks, including a portrait of Morison that I have depicted Dadd painting within this piece.</image:caption>

They championed their cause through songs, ceremonies, and a peculiar symbol: a bread-armored figurehead embodying their anti-war ethos. Despite public indifference, they persisted, staging radical protests like the infamous “Avian Purge” of 1915, where ducks symbolically attacked their bread-clad icon, representing the devastation of aerial bombing. Although misunderstood, this spectacle endures as a curious tradition. Over time, their annual ceremony evolved, incorporating a diverse range of musical influences. Traditional folk tunes meld with modern interpretations, ensuring the event’s vitality. <image:caption>Oil on Canvas - This is a commissioned portrait from the writer, philosopher and art collector Stephen Baycroft, who is currently writing a book about my work that will be published next year! The original idea of the painting was to depict the significant moments of Stephens life using symbolic references that can be found throughout the painting. However as the painting developed and as a result of a series of ongoing discussions between myself and Stephen surrounding the concept and development of the book. The collaboration of our ideas came to the surface with a series of mutual influences, themes and beliefs, that felt as if they were being born out from the page and out into the physical world!</image:caption>

<image:title>Commissions - “Dress for the party” A portrait of Steve Edge (2019)</image:title>
<image:caption>Oil on Canvas - 65cm X 100cm This is a portrait that I was commissioned to paint by my father Steve Edge that I completed last year. The background of the painting tells the story of his life beginning as a child in London where his dad, my grandfather worked at Smithfield's meat market as well as an animal handler in his spare time, it also makes reference to my dads life long passion for fishing that started on the banks of the Thames and the ponds of London and has since taken him all over the world. He is Known locally as ‘Lord Shoreditch’ for his eccentric style of dress and for his design studio ‘Steve Edge Design’ as well as for his mantra for life 'Dress for the party and the party comes to you'. Before becoming a Graphic designer he worked as an Apprentice Jockey as well as working on the films Star Wars and the India Jones movie ‘Raiders of the lost ark’ where his pet monkey Snuff played a major roll in the film. He also made a cameo appearance himself when he shaved his legs and wore a dress and became a stunt double for the lead actress during the snake pit scene. Growing up his childhood home was always full to the brim of all sorts of exotic animals including snakes, lizards and even the families pet chimpanzee 'Primo'. On the weekends as well as fishing he spends his time working on his log cabin that he built in Box hill, Surrey. I am one of five of my dads children and we are represented in the bottom corner of the painting as ducklings being photographed by his wife Sylvie who is a photographer. You can also see a totem Pole that makes reference to our Native Canadian family out in North Vancouver that are part of the 'Tsleil-Waututh' first nation that christened my dad with the tribal name 'Eagle dancer'.</image:caption>

The backdrop of the painting makes symbolic references to Hanis family, passions and pivotal achievements throughout his career. Over his shoulder on the left is a Portrait of Hani's father Dr M S Farsi and beneath is a frame containing a picture of his wife and children. On the right hand side are book spines that makes references to many of Hanis passions as well as being symbolic of his love of collecting and reading. The 'Jeddah City of Art' book, that Hani produced himself whilst still studying as a student, makes reference to his love of Art and celebrates the artistic landscape of his native city of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. References to Hanis many successful business ventures and entrepreneurial instinct are symbolised by the framed origami butterfly, that is made from the first ten pounds Hani earned after opening his first bar 'Che'. Resting beneath are the DVD's of the five films that Hani has produced to date, including '20,000 Days on Earth'. Two of the book spines also make reference to one of Hanis latest ventures, a tv series about a young Winston Churchill, that I included as a symbol of Hanis future ambitions and passion for new projects and opportunities.</image:caption>

Who is currently campaigning for Pittsburgh to commemorate the life of John Kane by renaming the Beechwood Blvd bridge after him. John Kane was born in West Calder, Scotland in 1860. After the death of his father as a young boy he began working in the mines to support his family. At 19 he emigrated to America where he worked tough manual labour jobs. At the age of 31 he tragically lost the lower part of his left leg whilst saving a family member from an approaching train. After his accident he adjusted to life with a disability and began painting steel railroad cars. This ignited a new direction for Kane and he soon began painting obsessively and after submitting work to the notorious Carrie internationals he was discovered by the art-world and received national and later international acclaim for his work.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Oil On Canvas - 64cm X 100cm This portrait is a private commission from Patrick Couderc, retracing the pivotal stages of his life. The composition begins in the French town of Villefranche-de-Rouergue, where he was born and his grandfather operated a flour mill on the nearby river. Then on to the village of Milhars, where his father worked as a postman and Patrick was raised. He later attended the ‘Paris Hospitality management School’ where his passion for the arts blossomed, visiting theatres and operas six nights a week after striking up a friendship with Le Monde’s Lead Art Critic. After graduating Patrick moved to London to begin an internship at the Dorchester Hotel, where on his arrival he met his life-long partner and future wife Polly on the hotel’s stairs. This marked the beginning of Patrick’s London life and other influential first meetings and important relationships that have been depicted within the painting. <image:title>Commissions - Bob and Beryl Paine</image:title>
<image:caption>Oil on Canvas (2019) - 35cm X 55cm This portrait was privately commissioned by brother and sister Stephen Paine and Sarah Large to celebrate their parents Bob and Beryl Paine's landmark 60th year wedding anniversary. The painting tells the story of each individual's background before they met. Beryl grew up in a small terraced house in Manchester, with a love of mathematics, that she went on to study and teach. Bob was born in Egypt and left school at 16, working for the Coal board, whilst studying A levels at night school and as a result was accepted to study at Sheffield university, where he did a Phd. In Sheffield he met meet Beryl, who's immediate appeal was that she owned a car, was a teacher and could transport him and his jazz band around, in which he played the saxophone. The couple then settled up north and had a family, and then relocated to the South east of England and now have six grandchildren. The objects included in the painting reflect each of their individual personalities. For Beryl, she bred sheep, has a love of crosswords and her family, whose names are included within the crossword. For Bob since retiring as a CEO of an industrial group, he has taken up painting, continued his love of list making, dancing, listening to music and generally being creative, that you can see represented in his home-made incense burner on the table in the foreground. In the sky you can see the couple's holiday home in Spain, that represents how far they have both come from their humble beginnings. The painting as a whole is a commemoration and celebration of two individual lives coming together resulting in a successful 60 year marriage side by side.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Commissions - JOHN FERNANDEZ (2017)</image:title>
<image:caption>Oil on Canvas - 40cm X 30cm This is a painting I was commissioned to make to commemorate the life of my old friend John Fernandez who died under tragic circumstances around this time last year. I first met John back at school and was impressed by his great sense of humour and passion for all things military so it didn’t surprise me that he fulfilled his early ambitions and signed up to the army in adulthood. Serving with the second battalion, princess of wales, royal regiment (nicknamed the tigers) where he worked his way up to the Corporal position. In the painting he is standing in front of his family home the ‘Herons Folly’ a place where I had many great and fun memories with John back in my school days growing up. Although me and John saw little of each other in his later days we always kept in touch and had a laugh about the old times that in most cases involved being chased or getting up to mischief in in some shape or form. John by all accounts was a religious man this was represented by the rosary that I have depicted him holding in the painting. He also loved his dog and faithful friend Lilly who also appears in the painting.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Oil On Canvas - 45cm X 60cm This is a piece that I was commissioned to make last year for a couple who wished for me to create a painting of themselves, depicted within a local scene. This was to represent and celebrate their recent move to lambeth, London and their life together as a couple.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Commissions - James Lynch (2017)</image:title>
<image:caption>Oil on Canvas - 25cm X 20cm This is a portrait of James Lynch who I was commisoned to paint by his sons for a sixtieth birthday present. James was born in Glasgow, Scotland and moved to London to attend Art School. He lived in Shoreditch and worked as a graphic designer and property developer. This is represented in the right hand side of the painting that includes a city scape of old Shoreditch as well as his old local pub the Barley Mow. James has since left Shoreditch and moved with his family to Wales and started fforest with his wife. A set of award winning holiday and events venues in rural west Wales. The left hand side of the painting represents this transition and new start with the sun rising over his new venture and a dramatic romantic sky on the right sitting over old shoreditch representing the past.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Commissions - RAY O’DONNELL (2017)</image:title>
<image:caption>Oil on Canvas - 50cm X 40cm I was commissioned to create this painting to celebrate Rays O’Donnell’s 60th birthday by his family. The brief of the painting was to celebrate Rays proud Irish and Scottish heritage and his talent on the Bagpipes as well as his life in Maine, USA. I achieved this by using imagery that has a significant meaning to Ray including the beach as that is one if his favourite past times. The sandcastles and flags were the finishing touches to show Rays fun side and again to celebrate his roots and heritage.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Oil on Canvas - 30cm X 25cm Fifi La Mer is a Parisian, French singer and accordion player, based in London who also performs with her band ‘Ooh La La’. A fantastic band who played at my wedding reception. Stephanie commissioned me to create this portrait of her playing her beloved accordion. The painting is going to be used for an album cover and other promotional material.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Oil on Canvas - 30cm x 25cm The name of the Sturgeon moon comes from it being the time of year when Sturgeon were most readily caught in abundance during August’s full moon. Also taking place in August is another tradition believed to be related to fishing, The Burryman. There is much speculation surrounding the origins of the Burryman, with the local folklore being that when the fishing was bad the Burryman was bought out as a scapegoat, where he would take away all the bad luck and evil spirits and as a result ‘would raise the Herring’ and the fish would return and there would be a successful harvest. The same tradition used to take place across other Scottish fishing communities, but have since died out, leaving the one and only Burryman of South Queensferry now in existence!</image:caption>

This full moon was born out of the 2020 Covid 19 global pandemic, a time in which the world stopped and reflected on the error of its ways and reflected on the changes that could be made for the good of all living things. The purpose of the O.M days moon is to make this a yearly reflection “For the good of all living things”</image:caption>

This year there was also a rare occurrence where there was a lunar eclipse and a partial blood moon and as a result the moon turned partially red due the earths shadow crossing the moons path.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Oil on canvas - 30cm x 25cm What was once known to the ancients as the Honey Moon, takes place around the time of the Summer Solstice. The name Is said to be due to it coinciding with the time of year when marriages were most popular, and also due to the custom of giving Mead and honey to newlywed’s during the first moon of their marriage, hence the term ‘honey moon’. Moon phases were also seen as symbols for the phases of Marriage itself, with the wedding being the happiest and fullest part, this was signified by the full moon. At sunrise on Friday morning this week (the 21st) druids, pagans and people from all over the world will gather at the ancient monument of Stonehenge to witness the Sunrise on the day of the Summer Solstice, a day that marks the time of year when daytime is at its longest and night time at its shortest. Stonehenge that is steeped in speculation and mystery has been a site of spiritual significance and congregation for thousands of years.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Moonlore Series - Full Flower Moon (2019)</image:title>
<image:caption>Oil on canvas - 30cm x 25cm The name derives from the plentiful sprouting flowers and budding fertility of the land that takes place at this time of year, coinciding with the beginning of summer and the widespread celebrations taking place up and down the country during the merry month of May. Throughout many of these celebrations, flowers are picked and carefully arranged into Garlands, such as during the Castleton Garland day celebrations, where a man on horseback wears a large Garland and marches through the streets followed by his consort, now a woman, but traditionally a man dressed in drag. The use of Garlands are believed by many to hark back to ancient times of nature worship, where fertility rites were performed and sacrifices were made to appease the gods. Tonight is also a rare occurrence as it also a blue moon, although the moon will not actually appear blue, it is instead referencing the fact that it is the fourth full moon of the season, when usually there are only three full moons in a season, the next blue moon won’t appear in our skies until the year 2021, hence the expression ‘Once in a blue moon’.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Moonlore Series - PINK HARE MOON (2019) (version two)</image:title>
<image:caption>Oil on Canvas - 30cm x 25cm Aprils full moon was once known to the ancients as the Pink Moon! The name derives not from the colour of the moon itself but from the pink blossoming land that springs to life at this time of year. Other names given to April’s full moon include new shoots moon, seed moon, budding moon and my favourite from Medieval Britain, Hare Moon. Hares and Easter have a long standing relationship, where in Pagan times Hares were sacrificed to the spring goddess ‘Eostre’ who’s name later evolved into the word ‘Easter’. The Christian replacement for the old Pagan celebration. It was also believed that Hares laid eggs at spring, and before being changed in more recent times, the Easter Bunny was originally a Hare.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Oil on Canvas - 30cm x 25cm Not only during April, does the landscape come alive, but so does the practice of spring rituals. In the old Lancashire town of Bacup, the Brittania Coconut Dancers perform a spring ritual of Pagan or medieval origin to celebrate the coming of spring, the renewal of vegetation and to move on any lingering evil spirits of winter. The dancers blacken their faces as part of a tradition called ‘guising’ to prevent themselves being recognised by any spirits when they return next year. Meanwhile In Hallaton in Leicestershire, the tradition of the Hare pie scramble will be taking place a tradition believed to go all the way back to when Hares were still sacrificed to the goddess ‘Eostre’.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Oil on Canvas - 30cm X 25cm During Spring as the temperature rises and the icy earth begins to thaw, the earth worm again emerges to the surface, causing a frenzy for the birds who appear in great numbers to feed, ancients who observed this phenonimum, aptly christened the full moon that marked this time as 'Full Worm Moon'. In North America, Native tribesman named the March full moon, 'Full Crow Moon' as the sound of 'caws', of the nest building crows, that could be heard in abundance at the time of year, was seen as a symbol of the end of the dark months of winter and the beginning of the cleansing months of Spring, when nature once again comes alive and fertility returns to the land. This year the Worm Moon fell on the same day as the Spring Equinox, the time of year when night and day are of equal length, and the long dark nights of winter have passed and various celebrations take place globally to mark the occasion, most notably by the Druids.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Oil on Canvas - 30cm x 25cm The Super Snow Moon, was the largest of this years Super Moons. Named by the ancients as ‘Snow Moon’ both in Europe and by Native American tribes for February traditionally being the time of year when snowfall was at is heaviest. In this painting I have also depicted the incredible February snow related Devon folk legend of the ‘Devils Footprints’ where in February 1855, after a bout of heavy snowfall, locals of the the Exe Estuary in East and South Devon and the surrounding areas, awoke to trails of cloven hood tracks that covered a distance of 40 to 100 miles, that defied scientific logic, for the strange meandering, single file patterns that were left in the snow. What also baffled locals was that whatever unidentifiable creature they were made by had a supernatural gift, that enabled it to walk straight over rivers, haystacks, snow covered roofs and a wide array of obstacles that would have stopped any known native living animal in its tracks. Due to the unexplainable nature of the hoof marks, Locals feared the worst and soon declared the tracks to be the marks of the ‘Cloven Hooves of Satan himself’ and for some time after this strange occurrence, avoided venturing from their homes past midnight, the story was picked up by the press and became a nationwide phenonimum</image:caption>

<image:title>Moonlore Series - WASSAIL AT WOLF BLOOD MOON (2019)</image:title>
<image:caption>Oil on Canvas - 30cm x 25cm In ancient times, the January full moon, that is also a super moon, was known as the Wolf moon, due to the howling cries of hungry packs of wolves that could be heard in abundance at night throughout the tough months of mid winter, when prey was at its most scarce. The last wolf in Britain was said to have been killed in Scotland by Sir Ewan Cameron in 1680, however there were tales of wolf sightings right up until 1888. Also at this time of year and still to this day, particularly in cider drinking regions, the ancient tradition of Wassailing (also once known as ‘Howling’) takes place. Where people gather and perform rituals, where cider is poured on to the roots of apple trees, slices of toast are tied to branches to attract robins, the guardian spirits of trees and songs are sang and loud noises are made, where guns are fired over the tops of the trees, to scare away any lingering evil spirits, that could interfere with the blessing of the orchard, that’s function is to ensure a bountiful apple cider harvest for the coming year.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Oil on Canvas - 30cm x 25cm The first Full moon after the Winter Solstice and the last full moon of the year was once known to ancients as the 'Oak Moon'. A time in which Celtic, Druid priests honoured the sacred Oak tree, for its endurance and noble presence and as a symbol of strength and eternity and made ritual sacrifices to the gods, to ask for the great strength of the Oak, to ensure survival and to ease the burden of living through the harsh months of winter. Also at this time of year during the mid winter celebrations, the Mari Lwyd appears in the towns and villages of the Welsh valleys. A tradition that involves a horses skull, mounted on a poll carried by a man hidden beneath a draped cloth. In Celtic Britain the horse was seen as a symbol of power, strength and fertility and the use of animal skulls in ritual practices represented the annual miracle of death, rebirth and the power of nature.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Moonlore Series - MOURNERS MOON (2019)</image:title>
<image:caption>Oil on Canvas - 30cm X 25cm The Mourners Moon is the first full moon after the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, that marked the end of the Harvest and natures decent into the dark months of winter. During this transitional period of Autumn, whilst preparing for Yule, and the beginning of the new year, people mourned their loved ones, seeds that never came into fruition and all the past failures and disappointments that had taken place during the year, but most importantly through the act of mourning, people cleansed themselves of any attachments that they were carrying to negativity and grief. Every year in the town of Ottery St Mary on November the 5th, the Flaming Tar Barrels ritual takes place, that according to ancient myth and legend, was a ritual once practiced widely across Britain at the time of Samhain, where spirits of the dead returned to the mortal world and bonfires were lit, and flaming tar barrels were carried through the streets to chase away any evil spirits, and to spare the people of their negative forces.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Oil on Canvas - 30cm x 25cm The Hunters Moon was named by ancient tribal people, that took advantage of this extra bright full moon, that allowed them to hunt at night and to gather the extra meat provisions needed to get through the tough months of winter. As you can see I have included the Abbots Bromley horn dancers in the painting, as one of the speculative theories on the mystery of the origins of he Horn dancers, was that the Horns themselves, were once used in the Needwood forest as part of a hunting ritual, where hunters mimicked the movements of deer to confuse them and to ensure a successful hunt.</image:caption>

It was also written by Caesar that in extreme cases such as in time of war, Human sacrifices were carried out by the Druid priests, as it was believed that animal sacrifice would not be enough to appease the gods.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Oil on Canvas - 30cm X 25cm Aleister Crowley dubbed by the press as the ‘wickedest man in the world’, was an occultist, magician, poet, painter, novelist, mountaineer and first to attempt the summit of K2. Born in 1875 to a highly religious family, he lost his father aged 11, resulting in a deep resentment against the morals and religious values of his time. As an adult he became fascinated with the Occult and performed rituals to evoke Pagan and demonic deities and heard voices telling him to form his own religion ‘Thelema’. Throughout his life he was labelled evil for his sadistic acts of sex magic and debauchery and died a penniless Heroin addict living in Hastings. However after his death in 1947 he became a cult icon amongst the youth movements of the 1960’s, even appearing on the ‘Sgt. pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ Beatles album cover.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Oil on Canvas - 45cm X 65cm Charles Darwin was was an English naturalist, geologist, author and biologist. He is best known for his contributions to science and for his seminal book 'On the Origin of Species' that presented to the world Darwins theory of evolution that is now credited by scientists and philosophers as one of the most important ideas that a human mind has ever produced. It has also been said that one of the often overlooked contributing factors to Darwins theory was inspired by his observations of the struggling lives of Victorian Londoners and the unforgiving 'survival of the fittest' nature of London itself.</image:caption>

      <image:title>London Paintings / Recent Portraits - SOCIAL MAPPING (2017)</image:title>
<image:caption>Oil on Canvas - 50cm X 40cm Charles Booth was a social researcher and social reformer. He most famously was responsible for creating poverty maps of London that depicted the inhabitants social classes, street by street, area by area, using a colour code system to mark which households belonged to which class. Booths poverty maps were recently bought back to public attention through the tv series 'The Secret History Of Our Streets' in one episode 'Arnold Circus' in Shoreditch, was the focus. Arnold Circus I found as a significant backdrop for the painting as it was one of Britains first ever council estate's, the old notorious slum that once stood in its place, the 'Old Nichol' was demolished in order for it to be built in 1890. Forcing out a whole community of locals who by most accounts ended up in worse conditions than they had been in originally. This old story reminded me of what is still happening in the area today with new developments and gentrification forcing out the original inhabitants and how history seems to repeat itself.</image:caption>

      <image:title>London Paintings / Recent Portraits - THE RAVENMASTER (2017)</image:title>
<image:caption>THE RAVENMASTER (2017) Oil on Canvas - 45cm X 65cm According to London folklore and legend six ravens must be kept at the Tower of London at all times. If one was to leave or die without prior replacement the city of London and the crown will fall. This is why there are always six ravens on duty at the Tower and an extra in reserve. In order to ensure that the birds are protected, one of the Towers Yeoman Warders is given the honoury position of the Ravenmaster. The Yeomen Warders were first introduced in 1485 by Henry VII and to be a Yeoman Warder, you must have served a minimum of 22 years in the military and hold an exemplary record as well as the rank of warrant officer or above. The current Ravenmaster is Christopher Skaife who I visited at the Tower in order to make some studies that resulted in this painting. The Raven depicted in the painting is his personal favourite called 'Merlina'. Ravens are an extremely intelligent animal that were once one of the most common species of birds to be found in London.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Oil on canvas, 12” x 10” Bryn Celli Ddu translated into English means ‘the mound in the dark grove’. This chambered tomb in Anglesey, that aligns with the rising Sun of the summer solstice was originally built in Neolithic times and would have been a significant place of ancestor worship. Anglesey itself has great significance in the story of the Roman conquest of the British Isles. By the year 50AD the Romans had pretty much eliminated the Druidic culture. All strongholds had fallen with the only remaining one being Anglesey in North Wales. Here the Druids took their final stand against the Roman legion where general Gaius Suetonius Paulinus wrote "On the shore stood the opposing army with its densest array of armed warriors. Between the ranks dashed women, attired in black like the Furies with their hair dishevelled, waving burning brands. All around them were Druids lifting their hands to heaven and pouring forth dreadful implications. Our soldiers were so petrified by the unfamiliar sight that as if their limbs were paralyzed, they stood motionless, exposed to wounds. Until at last, urged by their general not to quail before a troop of frenzied women, they bore the standards onward, smote down all resistance, and wrapped the foe in the flames of his own brands." As the Druids took their final stand and fell to defeat, women, children and men were all unmercifully massacred by the colonialists and thrown onto makeshift funeral pyres.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Oil on Canvas, 100cms X 80cms The Dorset Ooser, a figure steeped in mystery originating in Melbury Osmand village in Dorset. Its original purpose is not entirely certain however records suggest that it was once part of a charivari custom also known as skimity riding or rough music, where a type of mob justice was performed, in which a perceived wrong doer was humiliated through a ritualistic parade where locals would create effigies, bang pots and pans, mock and carry the unfortunate person/people through the streets. Grotesque masks such as the Dorset Ooser were used in such parades. The original mask that has also been debated to have been used in Mummers Plays and could have been a representation of the devil or a pagan fertility god unfortunately went missing in 1897 but was reproduced in 1975 thanks to historical photographs and is used to this day by the Wessex Morris Men who dance in the May at the Cerne Abbas Giant annually. The most recent version was created by Blackthorn Ritualistic Folk founder Jamie, known as 'The Darkest Ooser' who participates as a type of beast and mascot for the groups spectacular rituals and Border Morris dancing performances.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Oil on Canvas - 45cm X 60cm The Devil's Den is the remnant of a neolithic burial chamber known as a ‘Dolmen’ situated on the Fyfield downs, Wiltshire, where many of the great stones were sourced by the builders of the west countries most iconic ancient monuments, including Avebury and Stone Henge. In local folklore it is said that every night at midnight the Devil himself arrives with eight white oxen in an attempt to pull off the capstone but to no avail. A white rabbit with fiery eyes is also said to sit on top and offers his encouragement and advice. It is also local belief that if a good child runs around the Devils Den seven times that nothing will happen, but if a bad child does the same they will be met by a fire breathing toad. The Devil and stone monuments have had a long lasting association and are a reminder of a time when the church demonised the old gods and anything perceived to be associated with paganism in an ongoing campaign to convert the population to Christianity.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Oil on Canvas, 25cm x 30cm The Rollright stones is a stone circle on the Oxfordshire Warwickshire border and it was here that the pioneering 18th century antiquarian William Stukeley had a life changing experience in which he first had the thought that stone circles such as the Rollrights were the temples of the ancient Britain’s built by the Druids. This inspired him to obsessively investigate and document the ancient monuments of Britain. Stukeley’s work later became the main inspiration for William Blake to write his iconic hymn and alternative national anthem ‘Jerusalem’ that was about his romantic desire to rekindle Druidic culture in Britain. It turns out that although Stukeley was right in dating the stones to pre-roman times, the stones are actually much older and date back to the late Neolithic early Bronze Age period.</image:caption>

<image:title>LATEST PAINTINGS 2021 - 2022 - IN MY NATURE (SELF PORTRAIT AS THE GREEN MAN) (2021)</image:title>
<image:caption>Oil on canvas - 55cm x 40cm This is a self portrait that I made after completing my Frontline Folklore series. I depict myself as the Green Man a mythical figure that appears in both Pagan and Christian symbolism. A figure that to me represents the cyclical nature of death and rebirth, the seasons and our severed connection to nature as a species. The Green man reminds us that we are part of nature and most importantly not above it. I also feel as an artist that the act of art making and creativity itself is an extension of nature and through channelling our own individual personalities, we create unique art specific to ourselves and unique to the world. Within the painting I make references to my own life. In the backdrop we see the city of London, from Parliament Hill, a site believed to have been named by the Druids as Llandin, and part of an ancient spiritual complex that includes stone circles on the sights of St Pauls Cathedral and Westminster Abbey and potentially where the cities name derives. It was also a Roundhead stronghold during the civil war and the reason why it was renamed Parliament hill. Its relevance to me personally is the fact that London has been the place that I have spent the majority of my life and this site in particular is a place that I visit almost daily on my way to swim at the Hampstead Ponds. To the left we see the legend of St Dunstan and the devil, an early piece of folklore that I heard that has stuck in my mind and inspired me. At a young age my parents separated, I spent my weekends and holidays with my father in Shoreditch, East London and the majority of my childhood with my mother in the town of Southborough, Kent, close to the Kent Sussex border where this piece of Folklore is said to have unfolded. According to the legend, St Dunstan ended up in the East Sussex town of Mayfield after his conversion to Christianity working as a blacksmith. One day the devil confronted him enraged by the good work that he was doing for Christianity and disguised himself as a beautiful young woman and tried to seduce him, whilst dancing around and not managing to catch his gaze. One of his hooves was seen from beneath his dress, Dunstan instantly took the pair of red tongues that he was holding and clamped them onto the devils nose. In agony the devil could be heard screaming as he ran all the way to Tunbridge Wells where he spotted a natural spring and plunged his nose into the waters. This is the reason for the irony sulphur taste that can still be tasted to this day in the towns famous spring waters. On the right hand side of the painting I capture the moment in which a new idea was born when I witnessed a Druid ceremony (accidentally) on Tower Hill on the day of the Spring Equinox. From this serendipitous experience my whole Frontline Folklore series blossomed and manifested itself. A truly inspiring moment that lead to a life changing folkloric journey across the British Isles, a series of paintings and a documentary film that was exhibited in June 2021 at the Crypt gallery alongside the Museum of British Folklore collection.</image:caption>

      <image:title>LATEST PAINTINGS 2021 - 2022 - ORKNEY (2022)</image:title>
<image:caption>Oil on canvas, 100cm x 150cm The Stones of Stennes have stood in the heart of Orkney since Neolithic times, with evidence of work beginning in 3,100 BC, are speculated to be the oldest stone circle in the British Isles and where the nationwide standing stone cult began. It was noted right up until the the 19th century that a stone known as the Odin Stone, that was unfortunately destroyed by a farmer in 1814 due to his resentment of the trespassing of his land, was used in engagement ceremonies where couples would hold hands through the holed stone. Other magical rituals were also performed where people made oaths and promises and a 'Vow of Odin'. Today a residential home named ‘Odin House’ stands close to the circle as a surviving spectral reference. The Ring of Brodgar, a nearby monument that is third largest stone circle in the British Isles and part of the same Neolithic complex was built 500 years later. Twenty seven of the original sixty stones survive today. Each stone comes from a different area of Orkney, which highlights the different tribal communities that came together, united by the building of the monument. An old tale connected to the ancient site tells the story of a party of giants that once gathered accompanied by a fiddler to sing and dance. As the revellers danced hand in hand through the night, they lost track of time and as morning came on the holy day of the sabbath, the unfortunate group were turned to stone as a punishment by God. Another stone known as 'The Watch Stone' that is situated with the Neolithic Complex is said to come alive every year at midnight at the time of Hogmany (New Years) to take its annual drink from the loch. Other local beliefs include the Selkie folk, a type of hybrid human seal that can transform into beautiful humans, seducing people from the land in to the waters.</image:caption>

In the distance, the ears of a hare emerged, evoking folklore stories of Old Mother Venus, a shape-shifting witch who transformed into a hare. Other local legends spoke of the Long Man’s health-bringing powers and suggested a medieval monk etched the figure. <image:title>LATEST PAINTINGS 2021 - 2022 - Mead Moon, 2025</image:title>
<image:caption>Oil on Canvas, 25cm x 30cm Tonight marks what was once known to the ancients as the Full Mead Moon, now more commonly called the Strawberry Moon. June takes its name from Juno, the Roman goddess of marriage and protector of women. June’s full moon rises at the height of midsummer, when the days are longest and the nights are shortest, a time when people would gather to celebrate the summer solstice. It is also traditionally the month for weddings, a season of union and new beginnings. From the early medieval period, and likely long before, couples used holed standing stones in their wedding ceremonies, joining hands through the stone to make their vows. Mead, made from fermented honey, was then drunk by the newlyweds during the first moon after marriage, giving rise to the word “honeymoon.” Mead carried deep associations with fertility, magic, and sacred union. In medieval times, bees were seen as messengers to the spirit world, and beekeepers often monks were regarded as sages, keepers of ancestral knowledge rooted in the cycles of nature and time. The beehives themselves were kept informed of births, marriages, and deaths in a tradition known as 'Telling the Bees'. In Jungian psychology, the Sage archetype embodies this role of wisdom and guardianship, the quiet passing down of knowledge and a deep connection to the rhythms of nature and ancestry.</image:caption>

      <image:title>LATEST PAINTINGS 2021 - 2022 - BOSS MORRIS AT SPRING EQUINOX (2023)</image:title>
<image:caption>Oil on Canvas, 100cms X 80cms Boss Morris are an all girl Morris dancing side that formed in 2015, Stroud, Gloucestershire. Their unique approach that merges contemporary pop culture with ancient symbolism, folk art and traditional Morris dancing has sparked a new wave of Morris dancing known as 'Prog Morris' with Boss Morris very much at the forefront and pioneers of this new movement. As well as performing their own newly invented rituals that still coincide with the ancient wheel of the year Boss Morris also dance at long established traditional events and folk festivals. In 2022 I visited their hometown of Stroud in Gloucestershire on the Spring Equinox for a private ceremony to gather source material for this painting. I was interested in the Equinox as a time of balance. With the Equinox marking the time when night and day are of equal length, I saw this as a metaphor for how Boss Morris inspire us to rebalance ourselves with nature, creativity and feminine energy.</image:caption>

      <image:title>LATEST PAINTINGS 2021 - 2022 - THE VALE OF THE WHITE HORSE (2022)</image:title>
<image:caption>Oil and chalk from the Uffington White Horse on Canvas, 30cms X 25cms The Vale of the White Horse runs between the ancient Ridgeway trackway and the River Thames across the Cotswolds (once part of Berkshire) in Oxfordshire. The Uffington White Horse itself is the oldest hill figure in Britain and is situated on the slopes of White Horse Hill and is said to date at the earliest from 1380 BC. The horse is believed to represent a tribal symbol and could have been built by the builders of Uffington Castle or at least maintained by them. Other theories suggest that with it facing to the sky instead of being positioned further down the slope to help it be seen from great distance that it represents the sun horse. In the Bronze Age it was believed that the sun was drawn through the sky on a chariot pulled by a divine horse. For the horse to have survived this long in time it must be scoured and re-chalked and a festival known as ‘Pastimes’ that took place up until 1857, was once held on the hill at the time of the Summer Solstice, in which locals were said to have believed to go all the way back to Saxon times. The actual chalk of the White horse is mixed within the oil paint within this painting that I collected from the chalking of 2022. Close to White Horse Hill you will also find the Neolithic chambered long barrow Wayland's Smithy that has been dated to 3600 BC. According to local folklore it is said that if a traveller was to lose a horse shoe to take their horse to Wayland’s Smithy and to leave it over night with a piece of money and by daybreak the horse will be fully heeled and the money gone. It’s also said that the nearby Uffington white horse will disappear on occasion (most commonly under the guise of snow) as it’s made it’s way to Wayland’s Smithy for some new horse shoes. The legend of the black smith aka ‘Weyland’ derives from a Norse legend of a smith of exceptional, supernatural skill who the Anglo Saxons called ‘Weyland’ and believed the long barrow to be his home. My wife that I have depicted within the painting is from the near by market town of Faringdon that lies within the Vale and the symbol of the Uffington White Horse was used as the logo of her infant school uniform.</image:caption>

      <image:title>LATEST PAINTINGS 2021 - 2022 - Full Growing Moon, 2025</image:title>
<image:caption>Oil on Canvas, 30cm X 25cm Tonight is the night of what was once known to the ancients as the Full Growing Moon—the first full moon after the spring equinox—a time of hope and balance, when new life stirs and the days grow gradually longer. April begins with April Fools’ Day, when the Fool—trickster, truth-teller, sacred wanderer—steps into the unknown as light and dark hold each other in delicate tension. It is a threshold moment, when what lies hidden begins to take form. So too does the Fool carry the unformed future: a vessel of innocence, spontaneity, and untapped potential. In Jungian thought, the Fool represents both the inner child and the dualities of the Light and Shadow self—the one who leaps without certainty, disrupting order so that deeper truths might emerge and the true self be revealed. The nightingale, returning from its great migration, sings from the threshold of darkness, echoing the soul’s quiet awakening, while the energies of spring rise in tandem with the Self’s call to grow. April Fools’ Day is no accident—it is ancient ritual in disguise, honouring the chaos from which insight is born. For it is through embracing the dualities within—light and shadow, knowing and unknowing—that we begin the true journey of individuation. What seems foolish is often the first step toward wisdom, and what is most hidden holds the key to wholeness. We embrace the darkness and the light, And the duality of life. The Trickster once more steps into the great unknown— The cycle begins, a different man comes home, To the sound of hope as the nightingale sings, The earth erupts as new life springs.</image:caption>

      <image:title>LATEST PAINTINGS 2021 - 2022 - Full Mother's Moon, 2025,</image:title>
<image:caption>Oil and Uffington White Chalk on Canvas, 30cm X 25cm The full moon of May was once known to the ancients as the Mother’s Moon. Across many cultures, the moon has long been associated with motherhood and the divine feminine, due to its influence on menstrual cycles and its symbolic link to the rhythms of life. In some traditions, the moon is even seen as the wife of the sun. The full moon of May is linked to the ancient Greek goddess Maia, from whom the month takes its name. In Padstow, Cornwall, the Obby Oss dances through the streets on May Day to celebrate the coming of summer. The Oss enacts a day long ritual of death and rebirth, mirroring the seasonal cycle from winter’s end to spring’s fertility. According to local legend, if a woman is caught beneath the Oss’s skirt, she will fall pregnant by Christmas. Sheela-na-Gigs, found on early medieval churches, depict female figures exposing their vulvas. These carvings are believed by many to be linked to pre-Christian times and symbolize fertility, protection, and rebirth. Their open, unapologetic display of the life giving portal is reminiscent of the Neolithic long barrows built by early farmers, such as West Kennet Long Barrow. These barrows, aligned with celestial and moon cycles can be described as "wombs of stone," where the dead were returned to the earth, marking their spiritual rebirth into the realm of the ancestors. Other names for May’s full moon include the Hare Moon. The hare, like the moon, has long been a symbol of fertility, regeneration, and magic in ancient cultures, associations that persist to this day. Hares are also linked to goddess based traditions, with legends such as that of the Anglo-Saxon goddess Eostre, who was said to shape shift into a hare at the time of the full moon. In Jungian psychology, the 'Mother' archetype represents not only the literal caregiver, but also the symbolic nurturer, protector, and life giver. With the full moon’s long standing connections to femininity, fertility, and the unconscious, the Mother’s Moon resonates deeply with this archetype. As May unfolds, we find ourselves immersed in the archetypal energies of creation, growth, and renewal, both within the natural world and within our inner psyches.</image:caption>

      <image:title>LATEST PAINTINGS 2021 - 2022 - THE HOODEN HORSE (2023)</image:title>
<image:caption>Oil on Canvas, 30cm x 25cm The Hooden Horse, a wooden horse head mounted on a pole with a sack cloth draped over the wearer, is part of a folk custom known as hoodening unique to Kent, In which a group of villagers during the lead up to Christmas perform a folk play with themes of death and resurrection at local pubs and private parties. Originally only found in East Kent, although it relates to a wider spread tradition throughout the British Isles in which ‘Hooden animals’ often horses are paraded as part of seasonal themed rituals. The Hooden Horse tradition itself is believed to have originated with unemployed farm labourers, who during the hard months of winter, found creative ways to entertain crowds to earn money, beer and food. Going further back in time it has been suggested that the word ‘Hooden’ relates to the Anglo Saxon god Woden. This specific Hooden Horse named ‘Satan’ is part of the St Nicholas-At-Wade Hoodeners, the painting was inspired by a visit I made to witness the custom in December 2022.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Oil on Canvas - 25cm x 20cm This painting captures the moment in which a new idea was born when I witnessed a druid ceremony (accidentally) on Tower Hill on the day of the Spring Equinox.

      <image:title>LATEST PAINTINGS 2021 - 2022 - THE MUMMERS PLAY (2021)</image:title>
<image:caption>Oil on Canvas - 130cm x 100cm Mummers plays are a type of folk play performed by amateur actors that can be traced back to at least 1296 where the earliest reference can be found, stating 'Mummers of the Court' along with 'Fiddlers and Minstrels' performed at Edward the 1st's daughters wedding. Mumming a type of guising in which the identity of the participant is often concealed traditionally were performed by working men that couldn't find employment through the tough months of winter and took to entertaining crowds in return for beer, money and food. The themes of the plays are often themes of death and resurrection relating to the transitional, cyclical nature of the seasons and the biblical story of Jesus. I based this painting on a photo of the Alderley Mummers taken in 1920 from the Mary Houseman, Private Collection. All the Alderley Mummers were related, members of the Barber family, a large and well-established family centred around Brynlow Farm, tenanted land on the Alderley Park estate. Alderley Park was the family seat of the Lords Stanley they began performing the play at Alderley Park in the early 19th century and continued until 1937, when the estate was broken up and sold. Four generations of Barber family performed in front of six different Lord Stanley’s as part of the Christmas time celebrations.</image:caption>
